The most memorable event was an all night adults-only session at a riotous Oxford College midsummer's ball! The railway consisted of 100 yards of 9lb/yard steel track. The locomotive was a scaled-up version of the popular 5" gauge 'Sweet Pea' design. The loco later ran at Knebworth whilst the carriages were sold to a new line at Water Hall Farm. The loco 'Nicki Louise' was only a few days old when photographed here in 1988. It was built by Steam Powered Services of Burton-on-Trent. This loco, now much rebuilt, can be seen today on the Watford Miniature Railway Steam Powered Services also built six covered coaches for the line in 1988, 3 of which are seen here only a few days after delivery. They were not too succesful and therefore saw very limited use Train in the station Most of the trains were operated by this set of 4 passenger coaches which previously operated on the Prestatyn Miniature Railway - this was part of the old Ian Allan miniature railway business. It later appeared, along with 3 other ex-Southend coaches, at Tal-y-Cafn (North Wales) and here we see it photographed around 1990. This particular coach has now been returned to Southend and can be seen in the pier museum. Thursday 1 January 1970: Here we see coach No.21 which was part of the old 3ft 6in gauge railway which ran on Southend Pier between 1949 and 1978. The line operates in Pavilion Gardens and first opened in 1972 using a diesel 'Meteor' loco built by Shepperton Metal Products. It formed a simple 350 yard loop laid with aluminium track. In the late 1980s a new loco arrived from Steam Powered Services but, in common with all their other equipment it was a poor runner and never saw much use. In 2000 the line underwent a major rebuild which saw it regauged to 12 1/4" complete with a new Alan Keef train and steel track. The new loco is an 0-6-0 steam outline diesel. The Meteor loco was sold and is now at Vanstones Garden Centre, Herts. Thursday 1 January 1970: The 10 1/4" Buxton Miniature Railway seen during a visit around 1989/90. In 2000 the line underwent a major rebuild which saw it regauged to 12 1/4" complete with a new Alan Keef train and steel track. The new loco is an 0-6-0 steam outline diesel. The Meteor loco was sold and is now at Vanstones Garden Centre, Herts.

The loco built by Steam Powered Services The original Meteor loco named 'Borough of Buxton' first came here in 1972 and spent the next 28 years operating the service virtually single-handed. It's now running at Vanstones Garden Centre in Herts The newly-arrived loco from Steam Powered Services. It was a steam-outline diesel but was poorly designed and never saw much use. As can be seen it was in a very rundown state and was actually for sale at the time of my visit - I think the asking price was 16,000. The railway is still open today but, under new ownership, has since been restored to a much improved condition.

The terminus station at Mewsbrook Park. This scene is much changed today This is the site of the present-day terminus at Norfolk Road. The original old terminus (1948 to 1983) was slightly further down the track, just beyond the curve in the distance. However between 1984 and 1996 the line was extended to bring the station closer to the main road. This involved crossing this busy footpath seen in the foreground. The station was immediately behind the photographer A view looking towards Norfolk Road of the badly kinked track. Norfolk Road station as it appeared between 1984 and 1996. The current terminus is behind the photographer and across the footpath Cab view of 'Zion' Sign at Mewsbrook Park station Some of the passenger carriages which were built in the early 1970s Cab view of 'Southern Belle' 'Southern Belle' outisde the shed at Mewsbrook Park. The wooden sheds in the background date back to the early days of the railway - they've since been replaced by a large new building 'Zion' at Mewsbrook Park. This loco originally operated on the Hotham Park line in Bognor Regis. It came to Littlehampton in 1985 (after being regauged) and was powered by a Vauxhall 1200cc petrol engine. It left the railway in 1997. This photo shows the train crew trying to get it running - as I recall they were having major problems with it! 'Southern Belle' outside the shed. This loco was built the previous year (1988) and was powered by a Ford 1100cc petrol engine with hydraulic drive. During my visit it was out of use due to mechanical problems. It's still on the railway today but has been much rebuilt - it's now blue and carries the name 'Lady Barbara'. The rebuild included fitting a Ford 2300cc diesel and altered bodywork
